despace berlin

despace was a community
that provided pathways for involvement in Web3, with a special focus on projects and opportunities in the Tezos ecosystem.

In November 2021, I took the role of Head of Community and Ecosystem at TZ Connect, a subsidiary of the Tezos Foundation. Tasked with advancing the Tezos ecosystem, both locally in Berlin and globally, my responsibilities included building the Tezos community in Berlin, creating a comprehensive strategy, expanding the department, and overseeing all community-related projects and programs under the brand named despace [decentralised space].

As a Head of Community and Ecosystem, I:

  • Created and implemented a comprehensive strategy for Tezos adoption and growth in Berlin

  • Built the community department (3 FTEs )and its processes from scratch

  • Co-developed the despace berlin brand and its unique identity

  • Designed and led community experiences, including a grant program with a budget of €100,000, a new application of blockchain tech for artists, and an inclusion-driven art program

  • Managed partnerships and collaborations

  • Collaborated with the community advisory board to increase engagement and community satisfaction

  • Operated the physical community and event space, including the summer pop-up gallery, organizing over 45 events and 13 exhibitions, and welcoming more than 3,000 attendees

  • Ran cross-team projects and fostered relationships with external stakeholders

  • Created networking and growth opportunities for Tezos users

While implementing community programs, we continuously refined the brand and the overall aesthetic of despace. Alongside my colleague Anita Sengupta and external advisor Narta Dalladaku Studio, we focused on making Web3 more inviting and understandable, avoiding any sense of exclusion for those new to the topic. We dedicated time to outline our vision, mission, values, tone of voice, functional and emotional benefits, and community experiences, all resonating with us and the community.

“In record time, despace has established itself as a gravity center in the art / tech / web3 scene of Berlin.”

About despace:

Launched in December 2021, despace, short for decentralized space, envisioned cultivating a diverse and inclusive Web3 community. Beyond its online community spaces, despace featured a physical community hub designed to bring together members, grantees, and enthusiasts. This space served as a venue for meetups, events, and exhibitions, fostering a vibrant and collaborative environment.

despace at the glance:

  • 1 community space

  • 1 pop-up gallery

  • 40+ events (art, technology, developers, education, digital fashion, gaming, music...)

  • 9 NFT exhibitions

  • 2.500+ programs and event attendees

  • 1 small grants program

  • 13 grantees

  • numerous partnerships & collaborations (fxhash, Bright Moments, Refraction DAO, VerticalCrypto Art, Operator, Teia, NFT Club, NFT Biennial, Sonar+D, and others)

In March 2023 despace was discontinued. This decision was influenced by restructuring within the Tezos ecosystem. Despite this, despace had a powerful vision — to cultivate a diverse and inclusive Web3 community that empowered individuals to explore, learn, and create, with core values of curiosity, nurturing, and collaboration.
